Finally cool enough to sit and write... When the heat is oppressive I don't know how anyone gets ANYthing done.
I've been promo-ing again, and when not getting soaked to the skin on the way there, or my head boiled from being out in the sun, I'm glad to get home and sit in a cross-draft - barefoot. I'm so lucky to have windows on three sides in my living space... No matter how hot it is I get some respite. Another benefit of having a living room upstairs with large windows is that I can watch the weather changing from closer to the clouds...I always thought that seagulls came inland when it was cold. I realise they also come into London when it's stormy. My phone captured these, circling.
All the magazines are full of Autumn looks! It's hard to get your head around how hard it must be for a buyer right now. I saw a lovely coat in Vogue, in the new soft wool for all the tweeds that are coming. It's a Victoria Beckham, she's proved she can walk the walk. An article about how she has it all at 40. It doesn't just 'happen' that way, she's clearly worked for it. I note how she misses dancing, as that's what she says she was doing before even the Spice fever.
I have been thinking that I didn't miss leaving school, but I do miss not attending my old dance classes. That's been my continuity as well, I've always done it. From ballet with a strict teacher with a cane when I wasn't yet three years old, to my teaching. It's the one constant thing in my life and my favourite pastime.
Shows and pantos, dance reviews, and performing in the park - all those things are like my heartbeat. I have to say that the practicalities of this sort of performance don't have a glamorous edge. From my worst memory of getting changed in a (not quite hosed out) horsebox on the side of a field, along with the strange jolt of the view of slackjawed stage hands who always seem to blunder into an all-girl dressing room and linger slightly too long before 'realising their mistake'. Odd how often that happens. Luckily I am not body conscious. Surely these people must get enough of an eyeful watching a music video without hanging around us. You get gyration as well with the videos. It's just us changing, I wonder if they shouldn't get a job handing out numbers at a shop changing room if that's their preference.
Another thing which some people seem to enjoy is the whole hair and make-up experience. I must say I prefer to do my own, as I don't always appreciate the look that someone else has devised. I did a commercial last week, where I was the last person in the chair and the artist's haste clearly showed. She was just in a rush to get me in and out of the room as fast as possible, and my look suffered. I would rather find out the tone of what's required and produce my own take on it. Although my moods change on a whim, the industry is even more fickle. I was on standby for a job with a huge paycheque promised. Up to the day I was waiting for the call, but when it came, I was stood down. My day will come. Probably when I'm not expecting it.
I think the weather has cooled enough today for a roast dinner. My favourite kind... Off to the shops to buy some fresh veg now. Will write more when there's something to report.
