'Indian' Summer

Not sure where the name comes from.  I'm sure it's not a British thing.  Maybe, it should be Native American summer... the unexpected warm weather where you could get the most out of your harvest... I don't think there's one true answer.

Whatever the reason, I've been enjoying it while doing some promo work for a new store in Oxford Street.  Often you just turn up and smile whilst promoting the store opening, but this was a real hands-on job.  A 9am start which even involved blowing up balloons for the grand opening.  I love it when we get to meet up in the store beforehand, as I get to meet the other promo people for a chance to chat.  We're a mix, as always.  One magician, one singer, one make up artist, and me.   This time of year offers two types of work for me.  I suppose magic, singing, and cosmetics people always have down time.  But for me, I am just starting to get new work for my 'other' job, the dance teaching, with schools reopening for the new term.

I don't know how the magician blew up balloons and made them appear with the logos inside out.  Of course, he didn't tell me how he'd done it...  I watched him do it but didn't see him switch them!

Air conditioning full on, a sea of balloons all over the room and lively chatter, it almost seemed a shame to walk out on the main thoroughfare and chat to the public.  A queue had formed outside while we were prepping the store.  One man seemed really keen to get in.  He was asking what time we'd open as he'd been waiting an hour.  Another ten minutes, we promised him... At that point, he was exasperated and gave up!  I think he'd peaked too soon.  He did say something about coming back the next day so perhaps an hour was his absolute limit to wait for a store opening.  The clothes looked good, with summery dresses still on sale.  The last gasp of summer.

Here's me larking about trying on the sash whilst still in the balloon room...

My work-life balance is difficult to maintain.  The demands don't seem to fit my availability.  Despite letting everyone know which days I can do, I still seem to be on reserve at several places at once, with queries on days which I'd already earmarked for something else.  There's no real shortage of work in this industry, against the trend.

The part that excited me the most this week was hearing that I was shortlisted for London Fashion Week.  An ambition I've had for some time.  I've done runway before, but never on the scale of walking for a major brand.  It has taken for me to identify as plus size to get the gig, mind you. When I was a beanpole I didn't get a sniff of it.   So far I've not heard, so I can't say that it's happening, but to think I made the shortlist for the runway was enough for me at this stage.

That's all for now... let's see what next week brings.
