being yourself, it's the best you can be

This year my daughter returned from her educational trip to Seville bursting with the confidence you get from speaking a language abroad and travelling with your friends.  She learned a bit of flamenco dancing and visited a (non-working) bullring to learn a bit about something the Spanish seem to love.   Spanish being one of her options, it's a brilliant opportunity for her.  She also did a bit of market shopping to purchase ingredients to make paella.  She's a confident cook and baker (she made a delicious herby macaroni and cheese and a banoffee pie as soon as she was back) so swapped Food Tech for Photography to help in any future career choice.

While she was away, she missed the drama of one of our family pets taking ill.  Mum turned up and offered to take her to the vet.  Just as we went to put the poor moggie in the pet carrier we had the realisation that there wasn't one to be found.  With the cab on it's way, we improvised by using a lidded cat litter box done up with gaffer tape!  Never let anyone say that we aren't inventive.

After a consultation we discovered that the poor thing needed a new diet to help her kidneys function better.  She behaved so well for mum at the vet, no scratching or panicking at all.   All was well by the time the Spanish trip was over.

While she was away I had a bridal fittings day at an upscale boutique.  All the rich, indulgent, fabrics and ornate designs combine to give the brides a unique experience for their one special day.  For me, that is where the fantasy ends.  I am lucky in that I get to play dress up in new designs all the time.  I like to have a day of people rushing back and forth with pins and listening to my suggestions, but a wedding as a life goal for me is not on the cards.   Another fittings day followed and a hilarious casting for one of those plastic dental mouth stretching gadget games, where you distort your mouth and attempt to communicate.  The ice was very quickly broken by all of us displaying our teeth like cheeky chimps and doubling up in laughter.  That game should pass a Christmas break holiday afternoon with family or friends.

We planned a Halloween party and used our homegrown carved pumpkin, bobbing for apples, cobwebs, spiders, costumes, and spooky lighting.  During the afternoon my mum went to see my Gran in the Nursing Home as she had been ailing for a few weeks.  When mum came back she put on her make up and costume and we had a stonkingly good party.

Normally just about now I would be full steam ahead for my birthday and Christmas.  November is all about preparation and it's leading up to my favourite time of the year.  This November so far has been flat.  As our last guest was leaving we had the call from the nursing home to say that my Gran had passed away.   The children had a lovely party and had no idea how our party games and make up hid our feelings throughout that evening.  My Gran was always a big support in my following my dreams and not settling for a 9 - 5 job.  She accompanied me to many dance lessons, shows and castings, and had a keen interest in the stage and theatre.  She'd always been keen on saying 'be yourself' and 'follow your dreams' and I am going to carry that forward.

Came home from another lot of castings to a visit from my godparents.  It's always great to reminisce about my youth, they have a daughter a similar age and it's great to touch base with what everyone is up to.  I had been in my underwear all day at ASOS in a freezing room for 8 hours trying on different outfits.  The contrast between that and sitting down with a coffee and remembering my childhood was stark.

I had some more teaching fitted in as the Knightsbridge girls are heading towards a show.

We've decided for sure that we need to get a another cold blooded creature (as well as me) to complete the family.  More research needed.  We ventured outside London to look at reptiles.  I had a good time stroking the head of a gecko who seemed to enjoy it.  Gecko it is to start with.  We'll collect one before Christmas.

We'll all keep on keeping on, it's what Gran would have wanted.
